Q&A with Charleston City Paper — Book Authors: Dean Cowart and Kira Bailey

What you are hoping readers will get from the book?

This book is all about showcasing Life here in the Lowcountry. We are blessed to live in an area with such natural beauty unique blend of history and tradition. Our ultimate goal is to share these experiences with others.

Readers who are both familiar and unfamiliar with the Lowcountry will find all sorts of strange facts and stories. It will also be filled with beautiful full-color photographs and clever design elements. We want this book to really stand out on your coffee table – you can flip to any page and be immersed. We want readers to say ‘wow’ and maybe even motivate them to go and visit a few places if they haven’t already.

As anyone who lives in the Lowcountry knows, we are blessed to live in an area with immense natural beauty. We have unique blend of history and tradition that can only be found here – this book just celebrates that.

How important submissions are to the success of the book?

We have a great deal of content already in place, this includes beautiful full color photos, classic recipes, ghost stories, favorite events, landmarks and businesses, fun facts and trivia, and much more. However, we knew from the start that this book needed to have community involvement. Feedback has been really great. We have so many talented photographers, artists and writers here in the Lowcountry.

About how much it will go for?

We plan to release full-color tradepaper and hardcover versions. Dust Jacket will retail for around $24.95, while the paperback will be $14.95. We want to remain affordable and be seen everywhere.

What inspired the idea for the book?

Besides feeling this type of book was long overdue, we wanted to create a vehicle to showcase the pride, community and culture only found in the Lowcountry. We couldn’t think of a better way to promote our love for the area and the brilliant people who live here.

Why volume 1…are there more to come?

We plan to expand on the Palmetto Blended series in the future. The Lowcountry scene is constantly evolving and we are filled with inspirational ideas every day – we hope to share that with everyone.

  • [...] Book now accepting Entries! Written by Dean on July 24th, 2009 // Lowcountry Life, presented by Palmetto Blended, is now accepting submissions for their book, due to be on shelves [...]

  • Kim Garcia says:

The Lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia is one of the top ten places for Destination weddings! Its lush green marshes, palm trees, plantations, and driftwood covered beaches are steeped in Southern History. The Gullah Islands are centered in the heart of the Lowcountry with its historical African American heritage. The Gullah Festival held every year in Beaufort South Carolina is rich in Black history as they celebrate with dance, spiritual songs, storytelling and the traditional foods from a By- Gone era. I am blessed and proud to live amongst such a rich and historical piece of Southern Americana. ~ Kim Garcia

  • Someone asked me to submit a photo to go with their story, but it keeps not uploading. Does that mean the file is too big?

  • Dean Cowart says:

Possibly, or it may not be an accepted file type.. is it a regular image file? You may also submit by emailing us if you still get an error – publishing AT vistanow DOT net
